EDUCATION FOR DEMOCRACY

"Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development." ~ Kofi Annan, Nobel Peace Prize Winner and former Secretary General of the United Nations

Recognizing the intersections of education and the other key elements of a democratic society, we present the Education for Democracy Conference hoping that it will bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to strengthen a movement for democracy in all of public education, from Kindergarten through Higher Education. Our schools are a microcosm of life in our communities, where staff, students, and their parents are interacting with a broad diversity of people and cultures to develop ideas about the future and to grow our kids into responsible, ethical adults.

This conference will not only address democratic participation in education but also how schools are a part of building individual and community power in the development of participatory society. Historically, schools have been used as a tool to extend oppression of people and the suppression of ideas through curriculum, policies, and cultural norms. However, education as an institution has tremendous power to support our communities in the battles for social and economic justice.

The Education for Democracy Conference will explore these concepts by creating a dialogue focused on the campus and education through case studies, panel discussions, roundtable workshops, and skill-shares about:

--> Corporatization and privatization of education
--> Equal access to high quality education
--> Academic freedom and free speech in Schools
--> Building a movement for democracy in education
