Democracy Convention

Democracy is coming... to the U.S.A.

This session will look at the political conditions that have yielded the successful creation of a new Constitution. First, from the recent nation-state perspectives of Iceland and Tunisia, we will look at the 2008 financial crash and the Arab Spring as the impetus respectively. Then, we will look at countries that have rewritten constitutions under duress, such as occupied France. Finally, we will look at the US, both to the original constitutional convention and to states that have rewritten their Constitution, highlighting the shared organizing strategies, methods and political conditions that made each instance possible.
