Democracy is coming... to the U.S.A.

Americans have less and less control over their daily lives and almost no say on the direction of the economy. Jobs are insecure, wages are stagnating, debts are growing, retirement is underfunded, and health care is increasingly expensive and unstable. At the same, the wealthiest are getting wealthier, controlling a greater share of the wealth than any time in U.S. history. Their connections to political leadership ensure that economic elites face little risk in our crony capitalist economy.

While the American rhetoric of liberty, justice, democracy and equality has always been inspiring, the American reality has never matched those stated ideals. Because of this, U.S. history is filled with examples of people working together to build the social movements that are necessary to make profound and positive systemic change—the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, labor organizing, civil rights, ecology, global justice, and immigrants rights movements. The foundation for all of these efforts was a commitment by ordinary people to demand and create for themselves changes in their own lives and in their own communities. After all, we usually have the most power where we live and work.

The Community & Economic Democracy Conference will bring together activists from workplaces and communities that are creating and defending participatory democracy. We will convene participatory workshops and panels to share best practices that you can take back and make use of back home:

  • Build sustainable local living economies
  • Democratize the money supply
  • Assert Home Rule and fight preemption
  • Local protections for human rights and nature
  • Create publicly owned banks
  • Create worker and consumer owned and operated businesses
  • Develop participatory budgets
  • Fight and prevent foreclosures
  • Address national and global issues, locally
  • Build food sovereignty
  • Create community-owned energy, cable, health, and other core services
  • Stop corporate boondoggles
  • Protect our communities from fracking, incinerators, and other harms

The Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign and Energy Justice Network are the co-conveners of the Community Democracy Conference. Contact David, Mike and Cheri for more info.
